We have done a garden for years. Not very big ones as just in our back yards. We have had issues here and there but this year was horrid as far as the bugs. We are in a new state and 1st time to have to deal with squash bugs. They wiped out most our pumpkin and squash. They stayed away from all other crops thankfully. We do organic only and so the challenge with getting rid of them was new for us. Leap had adviced dawn dishsoap and that worked but lost a lot of food trying to figure it out. Dawn isnt organic but I thought better than those chemical bug killers. The rest of our garden did great. I often wonder, in shtf situation how would we deal with the bugs? This required a lot of etc. water spraying because you have to wash all the dawn off fairly soon after you spray. Another thing we found that helped was finding there egg batches. We would look for them under the leaves and just cut the batches off. Other than that I would say our best crop this year was our corn and the watermelon. We dehydrated a lot of the watermelon and boy that is so good if you want something sweet for the preps. I dont like watermelon but once dehydrated its like a natural candy. I have read over the years that there are some plants you can plant within garden to sway some bugs away. We havent tried that yet. Also I know some that well actually buy either ladybugs and or praying mantises to control the bugs. In nevada our garden did good. We had an abundance of lizards and suspect that helped with the bugs there. Also learned with the shortage of bees to leave the sugar ants[black ants] as they are great pollinators. We did witness this with all our gardens.
